Final Year Project –
Re-visiting Past and Imagining Possibility
Done in collaboration with Koh Jie Lyn, our final year project is an exploration into the realm of animated commercials through time, celebrating them as overlooked works in animation.
We created pastiches of iconic animated commercials styles from 3 time periods – the 60s, 90s and 2010s, for fictional coffee shop Quay Coffee. The subject of focus is the iconic local breakfast set of kaya toast, coffee and soft-boiled eggs.
Chang's Morning
Set in 1960s Singapore, this a pastiche of flat, 2D
cel-animated commercials featuring a relatable
scenario-based narrative, character mascots,
live footage and hard selling -- classic traits of
animated commercials in the 1960s. We follow an office worker, Mr Chang, who experiences the Monday blues and dreads the day of work ahead.
He is then led to Quay Coffee by the aroma of fresh Kopi brewing. There, he meets the ‘Kopi Crew’, who bring him the boost he needs for the new day at work. Energized, he leaves for work.
Roles: Script and Storyboard, Colorist
Kopi-O
The spotlight is on Toastie as she walks onto the coffee shop table. The eggs, Kopi cup and Kopi Pot join into a lively retro dance party with Toastie, grooving to the iconic local song “情感联络站”. Dancing and having fun together, the breakfast items show the harmony of the breakfast foods as well as the communal spirit of dining at Quay
Coffee.
The music video comes to an end with emphasis on the last line of the song, “Let’s move into a new day together” - an apt statement for the subject of breakfast.
Roles: Modelling and Texturing, Lighting and Rendering, Post-Production
Something for Everyone
The narrator is a young father talking about the
drinks different members of his family likes to order.
This is a lively presentation of different ways kopi is
prepared at the coffee shop: everyone can find a
beverage they like here. The ad also aims to bring
across the idea of heritage and family bonding over enjoying quality brews and the Singapore breakfast together, more so because the Quay Coffee Brand can now be marketed with its existing heritage.
Roles: Script and Storyboard, Illustration, Animation, Post-production
N.E.mation! 2019 – Choped!
Choped! is a collaborative work with by three students (Shannon Low, Nicole Ong and Ho Pei Ning) submitted for national animation competion N.E.mation! 2018.
Combining techniques of pixellation, 2D drawn animation as well as animation on AfterEffects, we put a spin on the local concept of chope to look at the positive ways the nation holds reserves and their impact on the nation's preparedness.
The clip was awarded first-runner up.
